Shehu Mohammed had his secondary school education at Barewa College, Zaria and King's College, Lagos. For his professional accounting qualification, he attended Worthing College, Sussex and Slough College of Technology, Berkshire in the United Kingdom (UK) where he qualified in 1975 as an associate member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

He also attended senior executive programmes at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (Enugu Campus) in 1978, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA in 1985 and the London Business School (LBA) in 1989.

He has over 20 years experiences in banking and finance starting from the position of accountant/investment executive at the New Nigeria Development Co. Ltd. (NNDC) Kaduna, 1975-1976, and group chief accountant, Kano State Hotels Management, 1977-1980.

He was also assistant general manager (1980-1986), deputy general manager (1986-1988) and executive director (1988-1990) of First Bank of Nigeria Plc. He was the managing director/CEO of Allied Bank of Nigeria Plc., (1990-1998).

He worked for short periods with the Standard Chartered Merchant Bank Limited, London, United Kingdom (1982) and the Standard Chartered Merchant Bank Limited, Harare, Zimbabwe (1985).

Presently, he holds the traditional title of Sarkin Shanun Kano and is the managing director/CEO of Integrated Development and Investment Services Limited (IDIS).

Shehu Mohammed is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, United Kingdom, (FCCA). He serves on the boards of several companies in Nigeria.
